Countdown to New Year’s

I hope everyone had a safe and happy New Year! In honor of the New Year we had a “Countdown to New Year’s” party. Children of all ages were invited to celebrate the New Year by counting down to 12 noon. We had a total of 25 children (ages 1 to 7) and 17 adults. There were refreshments (cookies, popcorn and pink lemonade), dancing and crafts. This party was very last minute, a little frantic and unorganized but still fun!!

Jim Gill saved the day when it came to the dance party portion. Since it is so hard to wait we practiced with “Can’t Wait to Celebrate.” Also it’s fun to be a little goofy, that’s where the “Silly Dance Contest” came in and in preparation for the countdown we danced to “Jumping and Counting.” We also passed out egg shakers and danced to Kidz Bop songs.

For the crafts we made star wands, silly hats, 2015 bookmarks and coloring pages.

Two minutes before noon we rallied the children together in the middle of the room and passed out noise makers. We instructed the kids that we were going to down count, yell “HAPPY NEW YEARS”  and then make as much noise as possible!!

How it Went:

Overall fun was had by the majority (I can’t say all because there were some tears). The main issue I had with the program was the disorganization of it all but considering we put it together in 2 hours I say we deserve an A for effort. I would throw this type of celebration again but next time I would start the planning earlier. The reason why this was so last minute is because the librarian who was supposed to do the program had a death in her family and then became sick; instead of canceling the program, myself and two other librarians joined forces to quickly put together music, crafts and food. I would say it ended up being a success!
