Story time: Ocean Animals

Five Little Fishies
Five little fishies swimming in the sea (swimming motion)
Teasing Mr. Shark, “No you can’t catch me, no you can’t catch me” (wave finger side to side)
Along comes Mr. Shark as quiet as can be… (whisper, move hands together slowly)
And snaps that fishie right out of the sea (clap hands)

(count down)
I had one child beg me to not let the last fish be eaten so we ended it with “but the fishie was too fast for Mr. Shark and got away.”

Baby Shark
Baby shark doot-doo, doot-doo-doo (tap thumb and pointer finger together)
Baby shark doot-doo, doot-doo-doo

I’m the Biggest Thing in the Ocean by Kevin Sherry Flannel Board
I love this book and thought it would translate well into a felt board and it definitely did! I wish I had enough time to actually make it out of felt but all I did was print off clip art images, laminate them and then put velcro on the back. Kids loved it!

Craft
For this craft all I did was cut out cardstock ocean animals. Kids then put glue all over their animal and put down tissue paper. For the final touch we added some eyes!

Dotty the Dinosaur
I originally got the idea after seeing Read It Again!’s post. The great thing about Dotty the Dinosaur is that you can adjust it. I had some fruit and vegetable felt pieces on hand and made my dinosaurs to match them. The dinosaurs can be used for so many things! My co-worker used them while doing a storytime about colors.

Dotty the Dinosaur loves to eat things like peas!
That is why the color of her skin is a lovely green.

One day she sees some strawberries and apples.
She eats them all day long.
Later that day Dotty turns a bright red.

(continue with other fruits/vegetables and colors)

Dotty couldn’t decide which color she likes best.
So Dotty eats everything.
Her skin an awful mess?

No, Dotty now has dots of color everywhere.
Dotty now was different but Dotty didn’t care.

Dotty loves her new skin, she likes it a lot.
Now she is the only dinosaur with a coat of polka dots!

Storytime: Snowmen

I recently lost my voice and am just starting to get it back. I was a little nervous to do story time today but I knew the wonderful parents would help me out! I also used a lot of music today (much more than I typically use) to help save my voice. You can either sing these songs alone or use the music to accompany you.

 

Snow on the Rooftop by Kathy Reid-Naiman
Snow on the rooftops (make pointed roof shape with arms)
Snow on the trees (hold arms up like branches)
Snow on the green grass (touch ground)
And snow on me! (point to self)

Snow on my mittens (hold up hands)
Snow on my nose (touch nose)

Storytime: Penguins

The favorite book we read was “I Like It When…” by Mary Murphy parents got a kick out of the interactive element and it engaged the children when they started to get the wiggles!

Two Little Penguins
Two little penguins sitting on the ice (hold up thumbs)
One bows once, the other bows twice (make thumbs up and down)
Waddle little penguins, waddle away (wiggle thumbs and put behind your back)
Come back penguins, time to play! (bring thumbs back out)

Penguin – Sign Language

I taught the children (and parents) the sign for “penguin.” This is a really fun sign to do and the kids loved it!

Storytime: Scarves (Part 2)

And as promised… here is the second part of how I use scarves in my programs. Don’t miss out on the first half which can be found here. I typically sing each song 2-3 times, this way by the end the children and parents know all of the actions.

Storytime: Scarves (Part 1)

I’m sure it comes as no surprise that I love using scarves in my programs. Who doesn’t love scarves?? I think parents enjoy them as much as the children do. I have compiled a list of the scarf songs and activities I use in my programs. The great thing about scarves is that you can modify them for any age group, even babies! Since I have such a large collection of scarf  activities and rhymes I will be posting it in 2 parts.

Green Means Go
For this activity you can have children march around the room or in place if you are in a small area.
Green means “Go, go, go, go” (wave green scarf, have children quickly march)
Yellow means “Slow, slow, slow” (wave yellow scarf, have children slowly march)
Red means “STOP” (wave red scarf, stand still)
Go! Go! Go!
Slow…. slow…. slow
STOP!
(repeat until children are tired)

Hey Diddle Diddle
Nursery rhymes are great to use scarves with. Typically, parents and children already know them so they can join in right away. Also, nursery rhymes are great for little minds (rhyming, builds memory, etc).
Hey diddle, diddle (wave scarf up and down)
The cat and the fiddle
The cow jumped over the moon (wave scarf over head)
The little dog laughed to see such sport
And the dish ran away with the spoon (hide behind back)

I typically repeat each rhyme or activity 2-3 times, the first time it is usually me doing it by myself but by the 3rd time the children know the actions and love doing it with you. If you regularly use scarves in storytimes (like I do) you often hear squeals of glee when they see the box of scarves. I’d love to hear how you use scarves in your programs! I’m always interested in learning new songs and activities.

A colleague told me about the CD Party Like a Preschooler by Go Fish and it was very fun and upbeat. I put the CD on shuffle and let the parents and their child explore the different instruments.

Summary: The attendance is still low and the age is younger than I anticipated but it did grow by one family this week (YAY!). I’m hoping eventually to have enough children to use the parachute with them. I didn’t have much time to plan today’s program and relied heavily upon my go tos. Next week I am hoping to do something more formal with instruments and use different songs.

Music & Movement: Week 1

I’ve been dying to start a Music & Movement program. I love dancing, (badly) singing and playing with instruments. I couldn’t wait until this program started. Since I wasn’t sure exactly how many kids or what age I would get I kept it very low key. I ended up with 2 kids, both age 2. I went with the flow of what these kids wanted to do, they were both great little guys and I hope they come back next week (with more friends)!

The song cube was as exciting as I hoped it would be, the children started jumping up and down when they saw it landed on the bus.

Next I put the music on shuffle and let the kids and their parent have free rein. It was a lot of fun to see the children experimenting with the different instruments, even the parents were getting into it.

Summary: The children were a little younger than I was hoping for and since there were only two it was a very laid back program. I look forward to it growing in the future.
