This flannel board is based on “Ten Red Apples” by Pat Hutchins. I have a lot of toddlers and was afraid I’d lose them if I went through the whole book so I adapted it to work for my group.

We started the storytime by talking about our favorite colors and how crayons are made. I didn’t read “What Happens at a Crayon Factory?” verbatim but it is a great book to introduce how crayons are made.

Five Little Crayons
Five little crayons standing in a row (hold up 5 fingers)
The first one said, “I’m red, you know!” (wiggle the fingers as you talk about them)

Crayons
For the next few songs/activities I handed each child a crayon to act out the motions. When handing out items of different colors I always remind children (and parents) that “You get what you get and you don’t get upset.”

Storytime: Shapes

I found shapes to be a more difficult storytime concept than I originally thought. It’s extremely important for kids to recognize shapes because it is how they differentiate letters. I received a lot of children under the age of 3 for this program and the storytime turned into more of an exercise for the parents on how they can point out and talk about shapes at home with their children. I hope the parents gained some valuable information from this storytime! This theme would have been better offered to preschool or kindergarten children.

 

Little, Bigger, Biggest

This is a great song to give each child a shape and have them bring it to the board. Since I had a younger crowd this week parents had to help them.

Make Your Own Flannel Board

Want to turn a box into a portable flannel board?? It’s as easy as 1-2-3!

If you’re anything like me (and most Children’s Librarians) your often out of the department. Being a librarian in a public library no longer means sitting at a desk all day, a large part of being a librarian today is about going into the community. I’ve done a variety of outreach – set up a table with library information at different events, speak about early literacy to parents and my favorite, storytime. When doing a storytime at a daycare or school I have to travel light, I would love to bring all of my egg shakers and scarves but it’s just not feasible. One item I do really miss when performing outreach is my flannel board. My flannel board is near and dear to my heart but I would never want to lug around the big flannel board easel the library owns. I decided to fix this problem and created a very easy mobile flannel board.

All you need is a box, scissors, a ruler, stapler and large piece of felt. I measured the box and cut the felt a few inches larger than the box. Then I stapled the felt to the box, making sure the felt was tight. TA DA! That’s all it took to create a nice, small, portable flannel board. Perfect for outreach story times or programs where you don’t have the space to set up a big flannel board easel.

Outreach: Animals

This week I performed my first outreach at a school. I was asked to do two 20 minute story times for 18 preschoolers. I watched a former colleague perform an outreach story time but I had never actually done one myself. What I learned from my co-worker is that you cannot bring all of your props and that you have to do a scaled down version of your typical program (mine usually consists of at least one flannel board, musical instruments, scarves, bean bags, and music cds). All I brought with me was a few books and a puppet. I was nervous it wouldn’t be enough but the children were very engaged the whole time and one of the teachers told me she had never heard of some of these books and really enjoyed them. It was a great experience for me (even though I lost my voice after it oops).

“Is Everyone Ready for Fun?” was by far the group favorite, the children (and teachers) all stood up and pretended that they were standing on chicken’s sofa. While I riled them up with the jumping and dancing, the ending nap is perfect to calm the children back down. I have never used this book in a program before and I definitely plan on using it again.

 

Five Little Kittens

Five little kittens standing in a row (hold up 5 fingers)

They nod their heads to the children so (bend fingers)

They run to the left (move hand left)

They stand up and stretch in the bright sunlight (stretch fingers out)
