Five Fat Peas
Five fat peas in a peapod pressed (hold up 5 fingers and intertwine hands)

Something in My Garden
I downloaded an app to my phone that plays animal noises. I would play the noise and ask the children what animal they thought it was. Then I would hold up a corresponding puppet. The kids loved this but after they learned the puppets were in my bag they kept taking them out for the rest of the storytime. I should have waited until the end to introduce them.
There’s something in my garden, now what can it be?

Out in the Garden (Tune: Down by the Station)
I bought this wonderful felt vegetables at Target in the dollar section and have been dying to use them! I originally planned to sing the song for each vegetable and have a rabbit puppet “eat” the veggies off of the felt board. The kids were a little crazed at this point and the rabbit was already bouncing around the storytime room.  Instead I have the children (who were already clustered around me) a veggie and asked them to feed the rabbit. They really seemed to enjoy it.


Out in the garden early in the morning
See the red tomatoes all in a row
See the hungry bunny coming out to eat them
Crunch, munch, crunch, munch, off he goes

Going on a Picnic
I recently bought this toddler safe food basket from Lakeshore Learning and used the food from it. I gave each child 1 piece and they put it into our picnic basket when I mentioned their item.


Going on a picnic, gonna pack a lunch
Going on a picnic, I wonder what we’ll munch??

Popsicle (Folder Story)
To make a folder story all you have to do is print out the image and put it on a file folder. Then you cut out the hole for the tongue. Next you find paper in the corresponding colors and put them in order in the folder. As you tell the story you pull out the paper and let the next one show through.

In the Summer when it’s really hot,
I want something that will hit the spot
Well it’s not a pickle & I’m not very fickle
All I want is an ice cold popsicle!

I’m eating a strawberry popsicle,
I’m eating a strawberrry popsicle
Slurp, slurp, slurp
Yum, yum, yum

Now stick out your tongue
Egh, egh, egh
What color is your tongue when you’re done?

Craft: Puffy Paint Popsicle
For this craft I walked parents and children through making their own puffy paint. We mixed glue and shaving cream together, then added a few colors of food coloring. Next children put the puffy paint all over their cardstock popsicle and we put sprinkles on them. The parents loved learning how to make puffy paint and many said they plan on doing it at home.



And of course we ended this story time by having some popsicles!

Storytime: Dinosaurs

This song has been turned into a book but unfortunately it wasn’t available in time for my program. This is such a fun song to march and roar to. I can’t wait to read the book!

Dotty the Dinosaur
I originally got the idea after seeing Read It Again!’s post. The great thing about Dotty the Dinosaur is that you can adjust it. I had some fruit and vegetable felt pieces on hand and made my dinosaurs to match them. The dinosaurs can be used for so many things! My co-worker used them while doing a storytime about colors.

Dotty the Dinosaur loves to eat things like peas!
That is why the color of her skin is a lovely green.

One day she sees some strawberries and apples.
She eats them all day long.
Later that day Dotty turns a bright red.

(continue with other fruits/vegetables and colors)

Dotty couldn’t decide which color she likes best.
So Dotty eats everything.
Her skin an awful mess?

No, Dotty now has dots of color everywhere.
Dotty now was different but Dotty didn’t care.

Dotty loves her new skin, she likes it a lot.
Now she is the only dinosaur with a coat of polka dots!

I love using a bear puppet to gobble the strawberries off the flannel board!

This flannel board is based on “Ten Red Apples” by Pat Hutchins. I have a lot of toddlers and was afraid I’d lose them if I went through the whole book so I adapted it to work for my group.

I used our mix and match flower flannel board, the kids loved being able to change the flowers around.

The second one says, “Oh yes, we need water” (nod head)
The third one says, “It’s getting hotter” (fan face)
The fourth one says, “I see clouds in the sky” (point up)
The fifth ones says,k “I wonder why?” (shrug shoulders)
Then BOOM went the thunder (clap)
And crash went the lightning
That springtime storm was very frightening (hug self)
But the flowers weren’t worried
Oh no, no, no (shake head)
Because the rain helps them grow, grow, grow (raise arms up)

Book Review: Someone Elses Summer by Rachel Bateman



Pub Date: May 9, 2017

Review: I’m not sure that “epic” is the word I would use to describe this road trip, maybe played out? I really liked the idea of Anna taking over her deceased sister’s bucket list. The road trip was light and entertaining but unoriginal. I felt like this book didn’t have an aspect that makes it stand out from other YA coming of age/road trip books. Anna and Cameron fall in love (obviously) but I never felt connected to their characters and quite frankly I didn’t really like Cameron. The characters weren’t really fleshed out. For example, we keep hearing how Piper is Anna’s best friends but all of their conversations and interactions are superficial. I wish there was more character development to help me become vested in the story. I honestly think my favorite character was Storm, who you never actually meet in the book but only hear about. Storm seemed to be the most dynamic character of the bunch. While I enjoyed the beginning half of the book I quickly grew uninterested. Overall, this book is a standard coming of age story that many teenage girls will enjoy.

Grandma’s Glasses

This was a great song to get wiggles out! We marched around the room, had kids jumping like frogs and danced about. Even the shyest kids got into it!

Missing Socks Flannel Board
(Tune: Where, Oh Where)
For this flannel board I hot glued a magnet onto a clothes pin and gave each child a clothes pin to practice opening and closing it. Parents were great about helping their little ones use their motor skills! Next I gave each child a colored sock and had them discuss with their parents what color the sock is. As I sang about my missing sock children would bring their matching sock to the board. 


Where, oh where did my socks go? (shrug shoulders)
Where, oh where can they be?
I have looked high and I have looked low (shield eyes and pretend to look)
Where, oh where can they be?

I’m looking for my red sock!

Book Review: Lost in a Book by Jennifer Donnelly

Beauty and the Beast: Lost in a Book by Jennifer Donnelly



Description: “An original addition to the beloved Beauty and the Beast fairy tale, “Lost in a Book” follows the lonely, bookish Belle as she finds an enchanted book in the Beast’s library called Nevermore that carries her into a glittering new world. There, Belle is befriended by a mysterious countess who offers her the life she’s always dreamed of.

But Nevermore is not what it seems, and the more time Belle spends there, the harder it is to leave. Good stories take hold of us and never let us go, and once Belle becomes lost in this book, she may never find her way out again.”

Review: There might be some burning pitchforks after me after this review but here it goes! There was a lot of hype surrounding this book and I became very excited when I heard about it (I even went to 2 stores to purchase it only to find out that it was sold it!). I was a huge Beauty and the Beast fan growing up and cannot wait for the movie! I must say that I had high expectations for this book, a lot of friends told me it was amazing, and maybe that is why I was so let down.

I found the story to be overplayed (love vs death, enchanted book, etc); to me it came off like a typical girl getting sucked into a fantasy world, blinded by beauty and is too dumb to realize what is happening. Belle is supposed to be a book smart character but does not see or listen to the warnings she is given in Nevermore. I became frustrated that she would fall for Death’s trickery so easily, I felt that she should have seen what was coming. Even until the middle of the book I was still holding out hope that Belle’s wits would persevere (not so much).

The story unfolds quickly, almost too quickly in my opinion. Due to the fast pace it was hard to feel a connection with the characters. I wish the book slowed down and built up more anticipation. Also, the character of Beast was lacking, he is not present for the majority of the story and I felt like he could have had a lot more depth than what was shown. It was hard to figure out why Belle was so drawn to Nevermore when she constantly spoke about her love for the servants and even her blossoming friendship with the Beast. Overall I felt like this story was rushed and not fully developed. I wanted to like it but just couldn’t get into it. This book is a quick read, I was able to binge read it in 2 days.

Even though I was not the biggest fan of “Lost in a Book” I do have several friends that adore it! They enjoyed it because it was not a retelling per se but still keeps the original characters present. Jennifer Donnelly is a great author and I did like how it wasn’t your typically retelling. There will be many Jennifer Donnelly and Beauty in the Beast fans that will find a treasure in this book!

Storytime: Snowmen

I recently lost my voice and am just starting to get it back. I was a little nervous to do story time today but I knew the wonderful parents would help me out! I also used a lot of music today (much more than I typically use) to help save my voice. You can either sing these songs alone or use the music to accompany you.


Snow on the Rooftop by Kathy Reid-Naiman
Snow on the rooftops (make pointed roof shape with arms)
Snow on the trees (hold arms up like branches)
Snow on the green grass (touch ground)
And snow on me! (point to self)

Snow on my mittens (hold up hands)
Snow on my nose (touch nose)

And snow on my toes (touch toes)

Twirling, swirling, whirling down (wave hands)

Chubby Little Snowman
